What Older Women Should Be Wearing This Summer

“If something’s not broke, don’t fix it,” Nigro laughs. Wearing the same shorts multiple times “is something Tina Fey would do, too,” and so would her character. She pairs her jorts with T-shirts, a denim shirt tied around her waist and broken-in Birkenstocks.

Kate’s beloved jorts are by AGOLDE and pricey: around $150. They’re made of “rigid, regenerative cotton” and hit about 3 inches above the knee — not too short for the 5-foot-4 1/2-inches Fey.

Jorts are popular this summer at all price ranges. The trendiest of the summer are A-line styles that almost reach the knee and have no stretch. It’s all about “rigid denim” this year — if you can stand denim at all in 95-degree temperatures.

If you want a more affordable option, check out the “baggy jorts” made of rigid cotton denim for $59 at Urban Outfitters or the “baggy jean shorts” in “non-stretch denim,” $32.99, at Old Navy.

My favorites are the “longline denim shorts” with a knee-grazing inseam from Gap. For $52, they’re 100 percent “regenerative” cotton — that means the cotton was farmed in a more sustainable way. I’m tempted to try them, but I live in Florida — which means those jorts would have to be saved for the 85-degree days we get in November.

But the truth is, I look stupid in jorts. They are not part of my style story.

Can You Wear Jorts?

You can wear anything you want, but, as Nigro would ask: Do jorts fit your “character” and story?

Kate’s jorts aren’t the trendy “baggy daddy” style — because Kate’s not trendy. The trendiest female character on The Four Seasons is Anne, who is described as a “rocker chick.” Anne is more likely to wear patterned, flowing linen pants from Free People than jorts from Lands’ End.

“Anne is more eclectic and wears a lot of small sustainable brands,” Nigro says. “She loves clothes and style, but she also loves comfort. She probably shops in smaller boutiques and vintage shops.”

Anne wears three of my favorite brands: Toast, a line from London that makes clothes with clean lines in top-quality fabrics; Imogene and Willie — I love this Nashville brand’s funky T-shirts — and Free People, among others.

My favorite summer outfit of Anne’s is the colorful ensemble she put together while the group was at the Jersey Shore in Episode 4 of Season 2. She wears vibrant linen/cotton pants printed with yellow daffodils by Kas Maria with a white T-shirt with yellow stripes and a bright blue satin bomber jacket from Imogene and Willie. I loved this lightweight jacket so much, I stalked it online and splurged on it. ($350! Gulp!).

Does Your Summer Wardrobe Fit?

Summer clothes are unforgiving, Nigro notes. A tank top that fit last year might be too tight this year, creating what I call “armpit niblets” under the arms.

I don’t care about showing my niblets and neither does Nigro. However, any item of clothing that rides up, rolls up or “eats up the butt crack,” as comedian Leanne Morgan says, is a no-go.

Go looser, not tighter, in summer. Keep in mind: “If things are too tight, that is more distracting than somebody’s style,” Nigro says.

Does Your Summer Wardrobe Tell Your Story?

“To me, not being yourself is the biggest no-no when it comes to dressing for any season,” notes Nigro, who lives in New York and wears one-piece coveralls to work because they’re so easy.

“I’m a woman over 50, and I have my own style,” she says. “I’m a little tomboyish but kind of funky… so coveralls with a hipster garden gnome mixed in somewhere.”

Her main thing: match the clothes to the character.

The same is true for you. Wear jorts or don’t. Wear vibrant colors or don’t. Just be sure to wear your story on your sleeve — or go sleeveless and proudly flash your niblets!
